К формуле «музыка — текст — спецэффекты», найденной в «The Dark Side of the Moon», здесь добавлен последний недостающий ингредиент: за неимением лучшего придется обозначить его словом «чувство». «Shine On You Crazy Diamond», девятичастная композиция, занимающая в общей сложности ¾ оперативного пространства пластинки, — это не масштабный прог-роковый эпос, как можно было бы подумать, исходя из ее хронометража, но чувственный, эмоциональный центр дискографии ансамбля — пронзительное посвящение Сиду Барретту (который абсолютно внезапно объявился в студии во время записи трека — и участники Pink Floyd не смогли сдержать слез). Трек получился еще более сокрушительной выразительной силы, чем «Echoes» с альбома «Meddle», предыдущий опыт Pink Floyd в пространстве крупной формы. Прочие фрагменты «Wish You Were Here» на этом фоне немного теряются, однако и в них ансамбль не опускает планку: «Welcome to the Machine» — классический зловещий напряженный номер от Роджера Уотерса, несколько индустриальный по звучанию, а заглавная композиция — не менее классическая пинкфлойдовская полуакустическая баллада в две гитары, прочувствованная, вдохновенная и абсолютно неотразимая.
